STORRS, Conn. (September 11, 2010) – The No. 6/10 University of Connecticut men’s soccer team battled No. 15/6 Harvard to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Saturday night at Morrone Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,918.
With its first tie of the season, UConn remains undefeated at 3-0-1 as Harvard moves to 2-0-1 overall. Tonight’s contest marked the first ranked opponent that Huskies have faced this season as they, in the past two seasons, have defeated or tied seven of their eight ranked foes.
Harvard struck first as Zack Wolfenzon gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead at the 18-minute mark of the contest. Tim Linden passed the ball from the top of the 18-yard box to Jamie Rees who found Wolfenzon cutting through the box to connect on his first goal of the season.
As the first half of tonight’s match was coming to a close, UConn earned a penalty kick as Harvard was called for a handball in the 18-yard box. Sophomore Stephane Diop drilled the shot into the back of the net to tie the game at one before intermission.
The next 65 minutes of play remained scoreless as UConn outshot the Crimson 25-6 on the night, including a 10-3 clip in the second half. UConn had some nice looks in the second half of play, including Mamadou Doudou Diouf’s attempt in the 64th minute, which hit off the post and back into play. The freshman fired a shot past Harvard defenders that missed wide right, colliding off the near post.
Josh Ford made three saves in net for UConn in 110 minutes played, while Harvard’s Austin Harms stopped three UConn attempts and allowed one goal.
The Huskies make their first road trip next weekend as they travel to Columbia, S.C. to play in the Gamecock Classic, hosted by South Carolina. UConn will face Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 17 at 5:00 p.m. before taking on South Carolina at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19.
