UC Santa Barbara men beat Harvard

Updated: September 18, 2010
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s soccer team captured its first victory of
the 2010 season on Friday evening as the Gauchos defeated sixth-ranked Harvard, 2-0, at
the Lobo Classic, which is being hosted by the University of New Mexico.

With the victory, UCSB improves to 1-2-2 on the season. Meanwhile, Harvard falls to 2-1-1.

Junior Joe Eubanks scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 43rd minute when he
received a cross in the box from sophomore Sam Garza. Eubanks buried the ball into the left
corner of the goal to give UCSB a 1-0 advantage.

Eubanks had entered the game just 10 minutes prior to scoring his first goal of the season
and his second career goal.

The Crimson out-shot the Gauchos 6-2 in the second half, but UCSB made its shots count. In
the waning moments of the game, freshman David Opoku beat Harvard goalkeeper Austin
Harms one-on-one in the box to give UCSB the 2-0 lead with just over three minutes left in
the game. The goal was the first of Opoku’s collegiate career.

For his part, UCSB goalkeeper senior Sam Hayden tied his season-high of five saves on his
way to posting the Gauchos’ first shutout of the season.

As has been the case in every game this season, UCSB led its opposition in shots 10-8 and
had six shots on goal. Garza led the team with four shots, three of which were on-frame.

The Gauchos will continue action at the Lobo Classic on Sunday when they face first-time
opponent Buffalo in a 10 a.m. (PT) match.
