BU men lose to Boston College

Updated: September 18, 2010

NEWTON, Mass. - Concluding a three-game road trip with its second consecutive ranked team, the Boston University men's soccer team fell at Boston College, 4-0, on Friday night at the Newton Campus Field. Ranked as high as fifth in the nation by Soccer America, the Eagles (3-0-2) tallied all four goals between the 34th and 43rd minute to earn their fourth straight win against the Terriers (3-2-1).

Miscommunication by the BU defense led to the first goal at 33:18, as the Eagles' Patrick Chin threw the ball toward an unchecked Conor Fitzpatrick, who rifled a shot from 30 yards out over redshirt-freshman keeper Brandon Briggs for the first score. Less than one minute later, Kyle Bekker curled a free kick from about 45 yards away on the far side toward the near post, and Karl Reddick one-timed the pass into the net.

Facing a 2-0 deficit against a hostile crowd, the Terriers tried to push the ball up and cut the lead in the first half, but a turnover near BC's box created a counter-attack opportunity for the Eagles. Edvin Worley brought the ball up and passed to Charlie Rugg, who managed to take a shot around a defender and place the ball just inside the left post past a diving Briggs at 42:45.Ā

The Eagles added one more score against the disheveled Terriers 14 seconds later, with Amit Aburmad and Rugg setting up Worley for his first goal of the season.

In the second half, the Terriers had a 6-3 edge in shots but were unable to avoid their first shutout of the season, as BC finished ahead in shot attempts, 18-14. BU had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks but did not help its cause with 20 fouls against the Eagles' 10.

Sophomore Michael Bustamante led the Terriers with three shots, including two on goal. Briggs had two saves, while sophomore Trevor McManamon recorded one in the final 24 minutes of the contest. Justin Luthy posted three of his own to help keep the Eagles undefeated on the season.

BU suffered its worst defeat since a 5-0 loss at Indiana in 2005 and will look to rebound Sunday (Sept. 19) at home against Ivy League foe Brown with action slated to begin at 7 p.m.
