Creighton men beat Dartmouth
Updated: September 19, 2010
PEORIA, Ill. - Jose Gomez notched a point in his sixth consecutive match Sunday afternoon, this time his point came on an overtime game-winning goal to lead the 16th-ranked Bluejays to a 3-2 win over Dartmouth in The Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley University. After the Bluejays were on the wrong end of a 3-2 overtime decision Friday against No. 18 SMU, they bounced back to improve to 5-1-0 on the season with Sunday's win.
Creighton scored just 2:20 into the match, scoring first for the sixth time in as many matches this year. Ethan Finlay tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the year, when he put in the rebound off of a Kris Clark shot.
Dartmouth (3-2-0) scored the equalizer in the 26th minute when Bryan Giudicelli put in his first goal of the season with an assist from Kevin Dzierzawski, as the Bluejays had trouble clearing the ball off a free kick.
The Bluejays took the lead back in the 63rd minute, as Greg Jordan scored his third goal of the year. Jordan knocked in his third header goal of the season from a Josh Moran corner kick.
The lead wasn't kept for long however, as the Bluejays again had difficulty in the back, playing without injured starter Andrew Duran. Just 53 seconds after the Jays had taken a 2-1 lead, an own goal by a Bluejay defender knotted the match at 2-2.
Creighton gained an edge in the 71st minute, when Dartmouth's Donnie Surdoval was sent off with a red card. The Bluejays would play with a man advantage for the remainder of the contest.
The Bluejays captured their first overtime win since the 2008 NCAA Tournament (2-1 over Connecticut) when Gomez scored his second goal of the season to extend his point scored streak. Gomez, a sophomore transfer, headed in the game-winner from close range on a service from Dion Acoff. He is the first Bluejay to notch at least one point in six straight matches since Brian Biggerstaff did so during the 2004 season.
Creighton returns home to open a four-game home stand on Friday when it plays host to Wisconsin. Kick off against the Badgers is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Morrison Stadium.
