Boston College men beat Rhode Island

Updated: September 22, 2010
NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Charlie Rugg broke a scoreless tie in the 79th minute and junior Edvin Worley added his second goal in as many games to lead No. 10 Boston College to a 2-0 non-league win over Rhode Island before 226 fans at the Newton Campus Field.

Rugg and Worley combined for 15 of a season-high 28 Eagle shots in the match.

Rugg broke through on his seventh shot of the contest.  The 6-foot, 175-pound product of Roslindale, Mass., redirected a curling right-footed cross from fullback Colin Murphy with a header from 12 yards out past Rams’ goalkeeper Peyton Warwick (six saves) for the gamewinner.

Worley doubled the BC lead just less than four minutes later – at 82:49 – on his seventh and final strike of the contest.  The 5-foot-10, 165-pound product of Jensen Beach, Fla., settled a Kyle Bekker pass with his back to the goal, turned and beat Warwick to the goalkeeper’s right.  Junior fullback Patrick Chin also assisted on the score.

Worley had nearly broken through in the 51st minute as he was on the receiving end of touch passes from Bekker and junior Amit Aburmad (seven shots), but his head ball flew just wide of the left post.

Rugg had also nearly snapped the draw in the 67th minute, streaking toward goal to receive a one-time feed off a Worley headball that he settled, dribbled and fired a low strike that a diving Warwick swatted aside.

Boston College’s defense, which today featured the debut of six-foot-freshman Chris Ager from Gjettum, Norway, held an opponent scoreless for the third straight match.  It last allowed a goal against versus then-No. 9 Maryland (Sept. 10) in the 60th minute.  The team extended its opponents’ scoreless streak to 340 minutes, 13 seconds.

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Luthy registered four saves to earn his third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career.

In addition to Warwick’s excellent save on Rugg in the 67th minute, the junior goalie also denied Karl Reddick’s bid off a corner in the 54th minute to preserve the tie at the time.

Forward David Malloy, who tallied four shots including two on Luthy, led a Ram offense that totaled 13 shots in the game.

Next, Boston College will return to Atlantic Coast Conference action at No. 11 Duke on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
