BC women beat Tar Heels

Chestnut Hill, MA (Thursday, September 23, 2010) – Boston College sophomore Victoria DiMartino scored one of
the most important goals of her two-year career late in the second half to give the No. 4 Eagles a 3-2 victory over No.
1 North Carolina on Thursday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Eagles remain undefeated at
8-0-1, while North Carolina is now 8-1-1.

“I thought the girls came out confident in the second half. To score three goals at UNC in the second half showed
some mental toughness,’’ said BC Head Coach Alison Foley. “This is a historical moment for the program and we are
certainly proud of the team for the great effort and accomplishment.’’

DiMartino scored in the 75th minute to give Boston College its first victory over UNC in 12 tries. DiMartino struck a
left-footed shot off a back pass from Kristen Mewis into the near left post to give BC the lead for good

Prior to DiMartino’s ninth goal of the season, the second half was a complete roller-coaster ride for both teams.

Six minutes into the half, BC’s Hannah Cerrone was granted a penalty kick when UNC was called for a hand ball in
the box. Cerrone’s offering went towards the low right corner and UNC’s freshman goalkeeper Anna Sieloff (1 save,
3 goals) made the save.

The momentum swung UNC’s way in the 59th minute. Megan Dunn scored on a cross from Courtney Jones. With
UNC up 1-0, the Eagles did not back down and continued to attack. About a minute later, DiMartino sent a beautiful
ball from outside the box to the far left post. Mewis ran onto the ball and headed it from five yards out into the far
right corner for a 1-1 tie.

In the 64th minute, UNC took control of the game when Dunn pounced on a deflected ball in the box. Dunn one-timed
the ball into the far left corner before BC goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni could recover.

BC junior Alaina Beyar, who had an outstanding game on defense, chose a perfect time to score her first goal of the
season. Beyar picked up a loose ball outside the box and dribbled by two defenders and ripped a shot into the top left
corner. UNC’s Sieloff had no chance as the ball slid into the high corner for a 2-2 tie in the 70th minute.

After DiMartino’s goal five minutes later, BC did not let UNC’s attack organize.
