UNC Wilmington men fall to Coastal Carolina
September 29, 2010
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Pedro Ribeiro scored the only goal Coastal Carolina would need as the Chanticleers trimmed nationally-ranked UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in men’s soccer action on Tuesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers improved to 4-3-1 while the Seahawks dropped to 5-3. It was the second time this season the Seahawks have been shutout, the other coming against then 11th-ranked Duke.
The winning goal came in the 14th minute on a CCU corner kick. Justin Portillo sent his corner kick to the far post where Sebastian Bahos sent a header back to the top of the penalty area for Ribeiro. He took a touch to settle the ball before firing his shot inside the left post at the 14:34 mark.
UNCW did build a 12-2 advantage in shots, but CCU goalkeeper Scott Angevine made four save for the clean sheet. The Seahawks best opportunity to draw even came with 18 minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Christian Davidson collected a loose ball and rattled off shot that beat Angevine to the right post, but Bahos calmly headed the ball off the goal line and out of danger.
Coastal nearly tied the game for UNCW late in the second half when a pair of CCU defenders struggled with their communication and wound up heading a cross towards their own goal. But Angevine made a diving save to push the ball over the crossbar.
The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association action on Oct. 2, when they visit Drexel for a 3 p.m. start.
