COLUMBUS, Ohio - David Tiemstra forced overtime with a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation as the No. 19-ranked
Ohio State men's soccer team foiled top-ranked Akron's NCAA record streak and battled to a 2-2 tie in front of a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record crowd of 7,255 Wednesday night.
The Zips (6-0-2) had not allowed a goal since Nov. 15, 2009, a streak of 11 games, tying the NCAA record previously set by Furman (2002) and Virginia (2009). Ohio State (5-2-2) is the first team to score two goals since Nov. 7 of last season when Hartwick put up a pair during its regular-season meeting with Akron.
"You could look up from the bench and obviously see that most of the stands were filled, but I had no idea how many it was," head coach John Bluem said of the record crowd. "Salute to the great fans from Akron who came out for the game tonight and a super thank you to our fans and local supporters of soccer who hopefully enjoyed what they saw and come back."
Tiemstra's goal with two seconds remaining in the second period came off a pass from Matt Gold a few yards out from the goal. Matt Lampson had cleared the ball from the Buckeyes' defensive third and hit Gold inside the goal box, who was able to cross the ball to Tiemstra.
There is no other feeling like it I could describe or like anything I have ever felt in my life," Tiemstra said. "It's just unbelievable."
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the two extra periods, despite several near chances on both sides. Austin McAnena sailed one over the crossbar and the Zips produced a handful of chances, all squelched by Lampson in goal.
McAnena was luckier in the first period, however, scoring the go-ahead goal and officially ruining the Zips shutout streak of 1,140 minutes. The sophomore midfielder struck a shot past Akron goaltender David Meves in the 30th minute to put the Scarlet and Gray up 1-0 and send the crowd into a frenzy. The lead lasted only six minutes after Akron's Michael Nanchoff snuck the ball past Lampson on a penalty shot in the 38th minute, following an alleged foul inside the penalty area.
Following Warzycha's ejection in the 52th minute, Darren Mattocks scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Zips in the 68th minute to give Akron the lead until Tiemstra's last-second tally.
Lampson finished with 10 saves for the Buckeyes, his second-consecutive match with double-digit stops, while Meves had eight saves of his own for the Zips. Akron out-shot Ohio State 25-16 on the night, though it only placed 13 on goal.
The Buckeyes return to action at noon Sunday against Michigan State in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Spartans, ranked No. 11 in the nation this week, are 8-1-0 on the season after defeating Northwestern, 2-0, Sunday. Ohio State has captured each of the last five meetings.
