Wake Forest men beat Virginia Tech

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sam Redmond scored just 48 seconds into the match and Kyle Emerson added a goal in the 83rd minute as Wake Forest defeated Virginia Tech 2-0 on Friday night at Spry Stadium.

 

With the win, the Demon Deacons improve to 3-0-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 4-4-1 overall. The Hokies are now 3-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.

 

The Deacs jumped on the Hokies from the outset, scoring just 48 seconds into the match when Redmond scored his first goal of the 2010 season. The goal was the fifth quickest in Wake Forest men’s soccer history. Emerson added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, scoring his first collegiate goal and points.

 

Tolani Ibikunle also notched the first point of his collegiate career, assisting on Redmond’s game winner in the first half.

 

Akira Fitzgerald recorded his second clean sheet of the season, making three saves in the win. He improved his goals against average on the season to 1.08.

 

Kyle Renfro suffered the loss in goal for Virginia Tech. Renfro allowed a goal and did not make a save in 20 minutes of play. Renfro exited in the 21st minute after an injury and was replaced by James Daly, who gave up a goal and made four saves in 70 minutes of action.

 

David Clemens had three shots to lead the Hokies, including two shots on goal. Mikey Minutillo had a pair of shots.

 

Wake Forest held a commanding 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on frame. The Deacs had 12 corner kicks, while the Hokies managed six corners.

 

Wake Forest wasted little time in scoring, taking a lead 48 seconds into the match. Ibikunle attempted a shot aimed at the left post that was cleared off the line by a Hokie defender. Redmond collected the rebound and fired a shot into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season. The goal was also the fifth quickest in Demon Deacon men’s soccer history.

 

The Demon Deacons nearly doubled the lead a minute later. Jared Watts played a through ball to Chris Duvall, who was 1-on-1 with the Virginia Tech goalkeeper. Duvall’s shot went wide right of the goal to keep the score at 1-0.

 

Wake Forest had another chance in the 21st minute. A corner kick from Duvall found Kyle Adams six yards out in the middle of the field and he headed the ball toward the left post, but the Hokie goalkeeper made a diving stop.

 

Virginia Tech had its best chance of the first half in the 34th minute. Beto Velazquez played a cross from the right side and found David Clemens, who headed the ball from close range, but Fitzgerald made a diving save to send the ball out for a corner kick.

 

The Deacs again came out quickly in the second half, attempting a shot just 21 seconds into the half. Andy Lubahn had an attempt from 21 yards out in the middle of the field that sailed high of the goal.

 

Luca Gimenez put a shot on frame in the 54th minute. Duvall slid a past to Gimenez on the right side of the 18-yard box. His shot from 10 yards out sailed straight to the keeper, who made the save.

 

Virginia Tech had its best look of the second 45 minutes in the 60th minute. David Fiorello attempted a free kick from 30 yards out in the middle of the field that went right to Fitzgerald for the easy save.

 

Wake Forest doubled the lead in the 83rd minute on Emerson’s first goal of his career. Emerson dribbled to the left side of the field just outside the 18-yard box and unleashed a shot from 19 yards out that went inside the right post to put the Deacs on top 2-0.

 

The Deacs nearly made the lead 3-0 in the 84th minute when Duvall had a shot from the middle of the field that required a diving stop by the Virginia Tech goalkeeper.

 

Wake Forest closes its three-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Appalachian State. Match time is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
