BC men beat NC State

NEWTON, Mass. – Four players – Charlie Rugg, Sacir Hot, Stefan Carter and Conor Fitzpatrick – scored one goal each and No. 15 Boston College registered three unanswered goals in three minutes, 41 seconds in the second half to earn a 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over NC State through a driving rain at Newton Campus Field.

 

The Eagles twice rallied from two one-goal deficits – 1-0 in the 16th minute and 2-1 in the 30th minute – to build a 4-2 lead and capture the victory.  Junior midfielder Amit Aburmad tallied two assists and was hauled down in the 63rd minute drawing a penalty kick for the victors.

 

Down 2-1 at halftime, Boston College’s Hot, Carter and Fitzpatrick each scored between 59:59 and 63:40 to build a 4-2 lead.

 

Hot, a central defender, launched a 70-yard kick that eluded NC State goalkeeper Will Mackvick (eight saves) for his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2-2.

 

Carter, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward, connected for his first collegiate goal just 23 seconds later.  The Wheatley Heights, N.Y., resident finished Aburmad’s through ball past a challenging goalkeeper Mackvick to lift BC to its first lead of the game at 60:21.

 

Fitzpatrick concluded the Boston College scoring from the penalty stripe in the 64th minute for the decisive goal and his fourth goal of the season.

 

NC State junior forward Craig Sutherland netted his second goal of the contest – finishing a feed from Mamadou Kansaye – in the 71st minute for the 4-3 final.

 

Sutherland scored twice in the match, also netting a header at 30:49, and senior Lucas Carpenter scored once for the Wolfpack.

 

The host Eagles outshot NC State 24-11, including a 16-6 edge in the game’s first 45 minutes.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Luthy recorded two saves in the winning effort.  He improves to 5-2-2.

 

Carpenter opened the game’s scoring at 15:08 before BC’s Rugg tied things at 1-1 just more than five minutes later.  The Roslindale, Mass., resident, connected on a right-footed shot from the corner of the 18-yard box to the opposite side-netting for his fourth goal of the season.  Aburmad and sophomore Colin Murphy assisted on the goal.

 

NC State’s Sutherland lifted the visitors to its second one-goal lead at 30:49, finishing off a Michael Smith feed with a header just out of Luthy’s reach for a 2-1 advantage.

 

Next, Boston College will play at Clemson in ACC action on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
