UConn men draw with Marquette

October 2, 2010

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The No. 3 UConn men’s soccer team battled Marquette to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on a rainy Friday night at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. With the tie, the Huskies remain undefeated at 7-0-2 overall on the year and 1-0-1 in league play.

Cascio scored the Huskies’ lone goal in the 29th minute to give UConn a 1-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles (3-3-3, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) heading into the second half. Marquette tied the game in the 80th minute to send the contest into overtime as Ryan Robb scored for the Golden Eagles.

UConn outshot the Golden Eagles 17-14 on the night as both teams finished regulation tied at 12 shots apiece.
Alan Ponce led the charge on the night with six shots, including three on goal. He took the first shot of the contest from 25-yards out in the third minute but his attempt was stopped by Marquette’s David Check for Check’s first save of the night.

Jossimar Sanchez intercepted a Golden Eagles’ pass around midfield and played a cross to Tony Cascio whose first shot attempt in the ninth minute of play missed just wide of target. Cascio found Ponce by the far post in the 21st minute but Ponce’s second shot of the half also went wide.

Cascio scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year as he created an opening for his shot at the top of the 18-yard box and drilled his attempt past a diving Check in net. For the junior, it was his sixth goal in the Huskies’ last five contests.

The rain came down heavier towards the end of the first half and stayed consistent throughout the second as the Huskies continued to battle in the BIG EAST Conference match.

Marquette tied the game in the 80th minute as Robb scored an unassisted goal. It was only the third goal allowed by the Huskies this season and the first in five games.

Andrew Jean-Baptiste drilled a shot in the 83rd minute but Check made a solid save in net for MU to keep the score knotted at one. Ponce tried to chip in the rebound off of the stop but Check was able to cover the ball to halt the play. Josh Ford made a great save in the 87th minute as he robbed Bryan

Ciesiulka with a leaping save. He finished the game with three stops for UConn.

The Huskies were literally inches away from victory in the 104th minute as Check was able to stop a shot by Thomas Wharf right before the net to seal the conference tie taking away Wharf’s chances of scoring the game winner.

UConn moves to 6-0-1 all-time against the Golden Eagles and 238-239-44 all-time on the road.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5 as UConn travels to No. 8 Maryland in College Park for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match.
