UNC Wilmington men beat James Madison

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Etienne Boulanger notched his notched his third game-winning goal of the season as UNCW edged James Madison, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic Association soccer action on Wednesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 7-3 overall and remained perfect in the CAA with a 3-0 mark. The Dukes, meanwhile, dropped to 6-2-1 and 1-1-1. For the Seahawks, they extended their conference unbeaten streak to 14, dating back to the 2009 season when they went 8-0-3.

UNCW got on the scoreboard first when senior Nassim Berhouni converted a cross from junior Shaun Utterson just 50 seconds in the match for a 1-0 lead. It was Berhouni’s second goal of the season.

The Dukes, however, drew even when senior striker CJ Sapong notched his eighth goal of the year. Sapong, who is ranked fourth nationally in goals, grabbed a loose ball and split the Seahawk defense before firing a shot inside the left post at the 21:46 mark.

Midway through the second half the Seahawks built an attack down the right side line as freshman Andy McDaniel beat his defender to a loose ball. McDaniel cut back to the inside at the top of the penalty area and slid a pass along to senior Devan Carroll in the middle of the field. Carroll took a touch and feed a wide open Boulanger at the top corner of the penalty area on the leftside. Boulanger drew JMU keeper Ken Manahan off his line before curling his shot inside the right post for the winning margin.

JMU had two opportunities to draw level again but UNCW junior goal keeper Brandon Miller made one of his four saves on the evening and a Seahawk defender cleared another off the goal line. The first was on a shot by Paul McAulay that was steered away by UNCW junior Christian Davidson in the 70th minute. The final chance for the Dukes came in the 82 minute when Miller made a diving save by the right post on a volley shot from Markus Bjorkheim.

The Dukes held a 13-10 advantage in shots and a narrow 4-3 lead in corner kicks.

The Seahawks continue their homestand on Oct. 9, when they host another nationally-ranked team in Old Dominion. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
