Saint Mary's men beat San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – The Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team pulled out a thrilling 1-0 victory in double overtime over San Francisco behind freshman Ismail Adam’s first collegiate goal on Wednesday night at Negoesco Stadium.  Adam volleyed in a rebound shot from five yards out in the 107th minute.  Doug Herrick finished off his fifth shutout of the year, lowering his goals against average to 0.85.

“It was a good game by both teams,” said head coach Adam Cooper.  “Both teams had their chances to score in regulation.  We showed great urgency and desire in OT to win the game.”

With the win, Saint Mary’s improves to 6-3-1, 2-1-0 West Coast Conference, while San Francisco drops to 2-7-1, 0-3-0 WCC.  The game was SMC’s fourth overtime game of the year as the Gaels are now 3-0-1 in those contests.

In the first half, Saint Mary’s took six shots, compared to just three by USF.  The Gaels took two corners while the Dons fired off three corner kicks in the first half.

While San Francisco held the 6-2 shots advantage in the second half, it was the Gaels who attempted all five shots in the first overtime period.  Adam’s goal came at the 106:32 mark, giving SMC the conference victory.

Dylan Leslie took a team-high five shots, including three shots on goal.  Joel Fumia also added three shots on goal.  Trevor Newquist and Justin Howard also attempted shots on goal for the Gaels.

USF was led by Tanner Smith with his four shots, two on goal.  Dons goalkeeper Brendan Roslund tallied eight saves.
