Wake Forest women beat NC State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jackie Logue scored eight minutes into overtime to send Wake Forest to a 2-1 victory over the NC State women’s soccer team Thursday night.
The Demon Deacons Marisa Park slipped a through ball onto Logue and she chipped a shot over the NC State keeper for the game’s deciding goal.
Tanya Cain had the only shot opportunity for NC State (7-6, 1-3 ACC) in the extra session, but she pushed her shot wide.
Kim Kern was stellar in goal once again for the Wolfpack. The Raleigh, N.C, native came up with two of her eight saves in overtime, before Logue scored at the 98:00 mark.
NC State took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when junior Kristina Argiroff scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Classmate Paige Dugal began the play by sending a corner kick into the goal box that Argiroff got a hold of at the 27:50 mark of the first half.
Wake Forest (9-4, 3-1 ACC) put six shots together in the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to push anything across the goal line. Kern made three saves to allow the visitors to hold a 1-0 advantage at intermission.
Wake Forest finally struck for the game’s equalizing goal in the middle portion of the second half when Kristen Meier found the back of the net for the first time in 2010.
Similar to the first-half goal by NC State, a corner kick by Logue was headed into the goal at the back post at the 76:19 mark to knot the match at 1-all.
The Deacs held an 18-10 advantage in shots for the game, while the Pack had five of the seven corner kicks throughout the evening.
Cain wound up with three shots to lead NC State, while Argiroff and Meagan Proper each recorded two shots.
Five of the Pack’s six losses have come by one goal this season, with two coming in overtime.
NC State is hosting a Kick for the Cure breast cancer awareness event on Sunday when the Wolfpack hosts Maryland at Dail Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
NC State will wear pink jerseys in honor of the fight against breast cancer. During the first half a silent auction will take place as fans will have the opportunity to bid on the jerseys worn during the match.
