Washington State women beat Arizona

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Katie Turney’s goal in the 34th minute gave Washington State a 1-0 victory over Arizona in Pacific-10 Conference Women’s soccer, Sunday.
Turney’s goal came after a cross from the right by freshman Micaela Castain in the box. Turney beat Arizona (4-7-2, 0-2-0 Pac-10) goalkeeper Ashley Jett for the game-winner.
“It (the goal) was a good moment for Katie,” WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. “It was the result of hard work. Overall, I thought we were a lot better offensively today compared to Friday. We are capable of that type of offensive performance every time we play.”
The Cougars (6-7-0, 1-1-0 Pac-10) recorded a season-high 20 shots to nine for the Wildcats. Castain led Washington State with six shots.
Washington State will play its first Pac-10 road match of the season, Friday, Oct. 15 at No. 1 Stanford, Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The goal by freshman Katie Turney was the first of her career…assist by freshman Micaela Castain was the first of her career and her team-leading 13th point of the season…Cougars improved to 7-2-0 at home against Arizona and won for the sixth-consecutive time overall in the series, their longest streak in school history against a Pacific-10 opponent.
