Wake Forest men fall to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary broke a scoreless tie at the half with two second half goals to defeat Wake Forest 2-0 on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium.
Wake Forest falls to 5-6-1 on the season, while William & Mary extends its unbeaten streak to five games, improving to 8-2-1 on the campaign.
After a scoreless first half, William & Mary scored two times in the first six minutes of the second half. Ben Anderson scored the game winner with a goal 57 seconds into the half, while Jimmy Carroll doubled the lead with a 51st minute goal.
Anderson scored his third goal of the season, while Carroll found the back of the net for the second time this season. Michael DiNuzzo assisted on Anderson’s goal, while Alan Koger had the helper on Carroll’s goal.
Kyle Emerson, Luca Gimenez, Andy Lubahn and Ben Newnam each attempted two shots to lead Wake Forest on the night.
Andrew McAdams earned the win in goal, making four saves to earn the shutout. Akira Fitzgerald suffered the loss, giving up two goals and making seven stops.
With the 90 minutes played in tonight’s match, Fitzgerald has now played 5,642 career minutes, which ranks second in school history. He also now has 206 career saves, moving into sixth place in school annals.
The Tribe had the first scoring chance of the match in the fourth minute. Nathaniel Baako played a cross from the left and found Koger near the left post. Koger’s sliding shot hit the outside of the left post and went out for a goal kick.
Wake Forest had its first attempt in the eighth minute. Chris Duvall played a cross from the right. Lubahn was able to get a touch on the ball, but the William & Mary goalkeeper made the easy save.
A pair of great saves by Fitzgerald in the middle of the first half kept the game scoreless. Baako had a shot from the middle of the field that Fitzgerald made a save on, sending the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick. A couple of minutes later, Ryan Snyder had an attempt that Fitzgerald made a kick save on.
Wake Forest started to have the better of the play near the end of the first half. In the final five seconds of the half, Newnam had an attempt from the right side of the 18-yard box that went just wide of the left post.
The Tribe jumped out to the lead with a goal in the first minute of the second half. DiNuzzo played a pass to Anderson on the right side. Anderson appeared to play a cross to the left side, but the ball found the left side netting for his third goal of the season.
The Demon Deacons had a shot on frame in the 59th minute as Emerson had an attempt that was saved by McAdams.
Wake Forest put a pair of shots on frame in the final 20 minutes as Newnam and Gimenez each had attempts that were saved.
William & Mary doubled its lead with a goal in the 51st minute. Koger played a ball over the top that found Carroll 1-on-1 with Fitzgerald. Carroll slid a shot under Fitzgerald inside the left post to make the score 2-0.
Wake Forest is back in action on Saturday, hosting NC State in the 2010 Genna Wiley Memorial Match. In conjunction with the match, Wake Forest will wear pink Nike jerseys, which will be auctioned off in a silent auction held during the match. Kickoff against the Wolfpack is set for 7 p.m.
