October 15, 2010
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Katie Stengel tied the Wake Forest freshman records for goals and points as the Wake Forest and Virginia Tech women’s soccer teams played to a back-and-forth 3-3 double overtime draw at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va. on Thursday. With the point, the Demon Deacons currently hold sole possession of first place in the ACC with 13 points through their first six games.
Wake Forest’s record stands at 10-4-1 (4-1-1 ACC), while Virginia Tech holds at 8-5-1 (2-2-1 ACC).
The Hokies jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Marika Gray and Amanda Gerhard before the Deacons got three unanswered goals from Marisa Park, Katie Stengel and Kristen Meier to take a 3-2 lead of their own. Jazmine Reeves got the final goal of the game for the Hokies and the two teams played through a scoreless overtime, leaving the final score 3-3.
Stengel’s goal was her 12th of the season, tying Liz Burnette’s 1996 freshman record, and also gave her her 27th point of the year, reaching the same mark that was achieved by Burnette in 1996 and Joline Charlton in 1999.
Park also earned an assist, giving her the first three-point game of her career, and D’Agostino also picked up an assist for Wake Forest. Park and Meier’s goals were both their second of the year.
The Hokies took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute off of a mistake by the Wake Forest defense. Virginia Tech launched a 50-yard ball that caught Bledsoe out of her box where she was unable to grab it. It bounced past the Deacon defenders and Gray slotted it into the vacant net to give the Hokies the lead.
In the 33rd minute, Stengel collected a misplayed clearance in the box and rifled a shot from 12 yards that went just wide of the left post.
Virginia Tech added to its lead in the 39th minute when a corner kick landed into a scramble in the Wake Forest box and after Jennifer Harvey had one attempt at goal, Amanda Gerhard roofed it into the top of the net to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead.
Marisa Park pulled a goal back in the 41st minute when she stole the ball from a Hokie in her own half and sprinted 30 yards through the midfield, ripping a shot from 26 yards that deflected of the face of a Virginia Tech player, then off the inside of the post and into the net to make the score 2-1.
Stengel scored her record-tying goal in the 52nd minute when she collected a through ball on the left from D’Agostino and slotted a shot past the charging keeper.
Meier gave the Deacs a 3-2 lead in the 56th minute, taking a long pass from Park and sliding a shot into the back of the net.
Reeves tied the game at 3-3 in the 57th minute, collecting a lob off of a short corner that caught the defense unprepared and putting the ball into the goal.
Wake Forest will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on No. 9 Virginia.
