Francis Marion women beat Longwood

FARMVILLE, VA -- Longwood University extended its home-winning streak to eight matches by scoring twice in the opening half en route to a 3-0 victory over Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Oct. 15) in women’s college soccer action.
Francis Marion, which was concluding its 2010 road schedule, drops to 3-12-2. The Patriots will celebrate Senior Day on Oct. 24 when FMU entertains Clemson University at 3 p.m.
Longwood (9-6-0) scored the only goal it would need at 23:29 when junior Kate Devlin scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Jessica Varela. The Lancers upped the margin to 2-0 when sophomore Lindsey Ottavio tallied her team-leading 14th goal this season at 32:09. She beat a couple of defenders before a successful shot to the upper right corner from the middle of the box. Ottavio is tied for fourth in Division I in goals this week, and tied for eighth nationally in points.
Longwood added a final goal in the 68th minute when sophomore Natalie Massey scored on a header off a free kick from junior Kacie Oliver.
Longwood had a 14-5 advantage in shots, including 9-4 in attempts on-goal. The Lancers also led in corner kicks 9-1.
Five different Patriots recorded shots, with junior Kiley Williams and freshmen Amelia Wallace-Zocher, Teri Kourtis, and Deanna Hunt registering shots on goal.
FMU junior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock played the first 76:27 for Francis Marion with six saves, while junior Casey Durham played the final 13:33 and did not record a save.
Graduate keeper Marcia Biddle played the first 70:47 in front of the net for the Lancers with two saves, while sophomore Kyra Byron played the final 19:13 and made two saves.
It was the eighth meeting between the two schools with Francis Marion now holding a 6-2-0 edge.
