Louisville women lose to Marquette

Updated: October 18, 2010
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Sophomore Emily Cardell scored a career best three goals, but it was not enough as the Louisville women’s soccer team fell 4-3 in overtime at No. 20 Marquette on Sunday afternoon at Valley Field.

With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 3-6-0 in BIG EAST Conference games and 9-7-0 overall, while the host Golden Eagles improved to 9-0-0 in league action and 12-3-2 overall.

Cardell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led the way in Louisville’s upset bid with the most goals in a single game for a Cardinal since Monique Gjini scored three goals in a 5-1 win over Seton Hall on Oct. 21, 2005. After entering Sunday’s game with three career goals, Cardell doubled that total and is now tied for second on the team with five goals this season.

Sunday’s game started with Louisville scoring the only two goals of the first 45 minutes for a 2-0 halftime advantage. Cardell opened the scoring in the fourth minute as she took a pass from senior Shannon Leamy (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) and connected for the 1-0 lead. The assist by Leamy was her second of the season.

Cardell scored her second goal of the day for Louisville’s two-goal lead less than nine minutes later after senior Caitlin Rehder (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS) and freshman Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) setup the scoring chance in the 12th minute. The assist for Rehder was her team-leading fifth of the season, while the assist for Uremovich was her third of the year.

Marquette broke through for its first goal of the game in the 57th minute as Rachel Sloan scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Maegan Kelly to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1. The Golden Eagles then tied the score at 2-2 less than eight minutes later on the second goal of the season for Rosie Malone-Povolny in the 65th minute.

Less than three minutes after Marquette pulled even, Louisville moved back in front at 3-2 on an unassisted goal off the foot of Cardell in the 67th minute. However, the Golden Eagles regained the momentum and tied the score at 3-3 less than one minute later on the fifth goal of the season by Ashley Bares in the 68th minute of play.

After the scored remained tied through the end of regulation play, Marquette wasted little time in completing its comeback win as Kerry McBride took a corner kick from Stephanie Vasos and connected for her first goal of the season and the game-winner just 56 seconds into the first overtime period.

Overall, Marquette finished with a 28-5 advantage in shots. Sophomore Taylor Vancil (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North HS) stopped nine shots for the Cardinals, while Natalie Kulla had three saves for the Golden Eagles.

Up next, Louisville will continue its four-game road stretch to close the regular season at Seton Hall on Friday at 7 p.m., ET.
