October 23, 2010
GRAND FORKS, North Dakota -- Nicole Archibald Spencer scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season as Utah Valley won its fifth straight match, 1-0, at North Dakota on Friday.
The win coupled with South Dakota's loss to Houston Baptist clinches the Great West Conference's West Division for the second straight year for the Wolverines (8-7-1, 4-0). The Fighting Sioux drop to 2-12-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Great West.
Archibald Spencer's goal came in the 61st minute on an assist from goalkeeper Lauren Sack. Spencer took Sack's goal kick from the opposite end of the field all the way into the box and beat two defenders and the keeper.
"North Dakota has been playing really good soccer. They put a lot of pressure on us in the first half and we didn't connect but we made some adjustments at halftime," said head coach Brent Anderson. "We also did a better job defensively in the second half. It was a good team effort overall."
The Wolverines out-shot the Sioux 16-10 including 8-3 on goal. UND had just four shots in the second half -- none on goal.
The shutout for Utah Valley is team's sixth and Sack's fourth of her freshman season. Sack has just a 0.31 goals against average in four conference games.
The Wolverines now travel to South Dakota for a match on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT.
