Long Island women defeat Monmouth
Updated: October 23, 2010
Brooklyn, N.Y. – Sophomore Jeanette Dolmetsch knocked home her first career goal and anchored the Long Island University women’s soccer team’s defense in a 1-0 win over Monmouth on Friday night at LIU Field. LIU improved to 12-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 in Northeast Conference play. The Blackbirds have gone unbeaten in 14 straight games, dating back to Aug. 28, and have yet to allow a goal in conference play this season.
After a scoreless first half, Long Island’s offense started to pressure the Monmouth backline in the second half. The Blackbirds narrowly missed breaking the deadlock in the 50th minute off of a set-piece. The ball came to freshman Jen Spicer inside the 18-yard box and she slipped a pass to junior Toni Smith who redirected her shot to the far post, but a Monmouth defender was able to clear it away before it crossed the goal line.
The Hawks came back in the 56th minute with their best opportunity of the night when a through pass set Kim Malecki open on goal, but freshman Jessica Sexton was able come off her line and stifle the one-on-one chance with a kick save.
From there LIU continued to pressure the Monmouth goal until the 75th minute when a corner kick by junior Ariana Calderon landed in traffic in front of goal. The Hawks defense tried to clear the ball, but Dolmetsch was able to get in front of the kick and deflect the ball into the back of the net for the decider. MU had a corner kick in the waning minutes, but the LIU defense kicked the ball out of danger.
Dolmetsch helped the LIU defense limit Monmouth to just two shots on goal, while the Blackbirds held a 9-6 advantage in shots overall. Sexton made a pair of saves to help Long Island post a program-best 12th shutout of the year and 10th straight in conference action. Lia Fierro made three saves for Monmouth.
The Blackbirds will honor nine seniors for Senior Day prior to Sunday’s contest against Mount St. Mary’s on LIU Field at 1:00 p.m.
