UConn men tie with Notre Dame

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 22, 2010) – Senior Josh Ford made six saves in his 48th career shutout as the No. 5 UConn men’s soccer team battled Notre Dame to a scoreless double-overtime tie live on Fox Soccer Channel on Friday night.
The Huskies, who played in front of a crowd of 4,463 fans at Morrone Stadium, remain unbeaten in BIG EAST Conference play as they move to 4-0-3 on the year. Overall, UConn is 10-1-3, while the Huskies remain undefeated on their home field with a 7-0-2 showing.
UConn has held its opponents to four goals all season and is outscoring its challengers 34-4, while keeping them at a 0.27 goals scored per game average. Tonight’s shutout was the 11th of the season for the Huskies and the ninth of the year for Ford.
Notre Dame (7-4-4, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) out shot the Huskies 5-1 in the overtime periods but UConn earned a 17-16 edge on the Irish for shots on the night.
UConn registered eight shots in the first half, led by its second of the night by junior Tony Cascio. Carlos Alvarez played the ball down field in the 20th minute where he found Cascio, whose shot carried high of the target on his first attempt of the contest.
Ford picked up two of his six saves in the first 13 minutes of tonight’s match as he stopped two early shot attempts by Steven Perry, Notre Dame’s points’ leader.
The Huskies put together some good chances late in the first half. A free kick by Alvarez in the 23rd minute set up UConn’s best scoring opportunity in the half as Robert Brickley’s header hit the cross bar and back into play.
Notre Dame began the game out-shooting the Huskies 4-0 before UConn took control of the contest and went into the break with an 8-7 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes of play.
Greg King put his lone shot on goal in the 58th minute as he one-timed an Alan Ponce pass. His attempt was grabbed by Notre Dame’s Philip Tuttle, for his third save of the night. Cascio made a great pass into the 18-yard box to Ponce in the 66th minute as the senior’s shot was stopped by a diving Tuttle. His attempt was followed by a corner kick by Alvarez, who found Colin Bradley 10 yards out but the red-shirt freshman’s shot was blocked by a defender.
At the end of regulation, UConn held a 16-11 advantage in shots, including its 8-4 clip in the second half. Ford made four stops in the first 90 minutes of play then picked up one save in each of the two overtime periods.
With eight minutes left in the match, Cascio crossed the ball to Stephane Diop on the near side of the field as the sophomore cut to his right and got off a shot that missed just wide left of the target, keeping the game scoreless in the second overtime period.
Ford made a game-saving stop in the 108th minute, as Notre Dame's Steven Perry drilled a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that Ford was able to redirect out of the box for his sixth save of the contest.
Ponce led the Huskies with five shots, including three on goal, while Jossimar Sanchez registered three attempts. Notre Dame’s Perry registered all three of his shots on net. Tuttle finished the game with five saves in 110 minutes played.
UConn will head to the nation’s capital next week as the Huskies get set to play Georgetown in a BIG EAST Conference match scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m
