Stony Brook men beat Binghamton
October 25, 2010
Sophomore Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with less than a minute left in the first overtime, to lift the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Binghamton Saturday night in Vestal, N.Y. With the win, the Seawolves moved into a second-place tie in America East with the Bearcats and UMBC. The three teams all have eight points with two games remaining in the regular season.
Stony Brook is now 7-1-3 over its last 11 matches to move to a 8-5-3 overall record, 2-1-2 in America East. Binghamton's eight-match unbeaten streak has been snapped, and the Bearcats are now 4-5-4.
Abreu was the star of the show as he picked up his fourth and fifth goals of the season. The game-winner came with just 33 seconds left in the first overtime. Mehdi Belakehal (St.-Hubert, Quebec) took a shot that Binghamton keeper Chris Haven saved, but couldn't control. Abreu got the rebound and put it past Haven for the win.
His first goal came in the first half in the 39th minute on passes from Wilber Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) and Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.). He got the ball and made a sliding kick past Haven. With five goals on the season, Abreu is now tied with Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) for second on the team in goals.
Binghamton scored the match's first goal in the 35th minute after Stony Brook's Kyle McTurk (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was yellow carded for his foul. Ryan Walter took an indirect kick, and Austin Hughes nailed a header past Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) for his first goal of the season.
Manz faced 12 shots on the night and made four saves. He allowed his first goal in his last 365 minutes, but won his eighth match of the season.
The comeback victory is Stony Brook's second of the season. The Seawolves overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Quinnipiac 3-2 last month.
Stony Brook will next play at Hartford Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves can clinch a spot and home field advantage for at least the first round in the America East Championship with a victory.
