Long Island women beat Mount St. Mary's
October 25, 2010
Brooklyn, N.Y. – Sophomore Katie Egan scored the deciding goal late in the second half to lift the Long Island University women’s soccer team past Mount St. Mary’s, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field. The win extended the Blackbirds’ unbeaten streak to 15 games and improved their record to 13-1-3 overall and 7-0-1 in the Northeast Conference. LIU recorded its 13th shutout of the year, extending its program record.
Long Island took control of the game in the second half, pressuring the Mount St. Mary’s defense with 12 shots, but was unable to convert until the 81st minute. The game-winning goal was set up on a throw-in deep in Mount territory from senior Caitlin Meadows. Meadows’ throw was headed on by senior Kayleigh Morgan to a charging Egan, who poked a shot into the net for the match-winner.
The Mountaineers pressed ahead in an attempt to even the score, but Jackie Corley’s shot off a corner kick in the 83rd minute went wide. The Blackbirds’ defense was impenetrable on the day, surrendering just two shots, neither of which was on frame by Mount St. Mary’s.
The team’s played a scoreless first half that did not feature a shot until the 39th minute. LIU took all three of the game’s shots in the first period and carried that momentum into the second half. Morgan and freshman Jen Spicer had shots for LIU in the opening three minutes of the second half to jumpstart the Blackbirds’ offense. Long Island controlled possession for much of the game, but Mount’s Alicia Miller made two saves to keep the game scoreless until Egan’s tally.
With the win, LIU improved to 12-0-3 since a loss to Cal Poly on Aug. 28. The Blackbirds also posted their 11th straight shutout in conference play.
Prior to the game, LIU honored its nine seniors: Meadows, Morgan, Samantha Bock, Kelly Carter, Tasia Davis, Christine DeLashmutt, Samantha Hoak, Lara Martinez and Brittany Schandelmayer.
The Blackbirds close out the regular-season next weekend with road games at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday, Oct. 29, and at Robert Morris on Sunday, Oct. 31.
