Eastern Michigan women lose to Toledo

Updated: October 25, 2010
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team dropped its first conference match of the season, falling, 1-0, to Mid-American Conference West Division leader and still undefeated Toledo Rockets at Scott Park, Sunday, Oct. 24.

With the loss, the Eagles' unbeaten streak of nine consecutive matches is snapped. Their previous loss occurred all the way back on Sept. 18, to Nevada. EMU now falls to 9-6-4 overall, 6-1-3 in MAC play. Meanwhile, Toledo extends its own winning streak to 11 matches and moves to 14-2-2 (10-0 MAC).

The Eagles were outshot 17-4 in the match while the Rockets also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, yet EMU still managed to keep the match close.

Four different Eagles recorded shots including Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic), Katie Marsh (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe) and Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi). One Eagle that did not record a shot was Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy). The stingy Toledo defense kept the senior standout at bay by preventing her from getting a single shot off for the first time in 13 matches.

The lone goal surrendered by EMU was a 14th minute score by Kristen Lynn that was assisted by Erin Flynn. In the Rockets' win over previously unbeaten Central Michigan Friday, Oct. 22, it was Lynn who provided the big score for Toledo, propelling the Rockets into sole possession of first place in the West Division.

EMU senior goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair), who set the EMU single season saves record in her last outing against Ball State, made seven saves in the losing effort.

Eastern Michigan will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 28, when it takes on reigning MAC regular season and tournament champion CMU on the road. The Eagles and Chippewas are slated to begin at 3 p.m. in Mount Pleasant.
