Washington State women fall to USC

LOS ANGELES – Karter Haug scored a goal in the 83rd minute and No. 23 USC came from behind to defeat visiting Washington State 3-2 in Pacific-10 Confernce women’s soccer, Friday.

Haug’s game-winner came from 30 yards out and found the top left corner of the net. The Cougars (6-12-0, 1-6-0 Pac-10) had tied the match 2-2 on freshman defender Rachael Doyle’s free kick from 25 yards out early in the 62nd minute.

"Although we lost the match, we took a positive step for the future today," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "I was very pleased with and proud of our energy and endeavor. If we continue to compete like that, it bodes well for our program moving forward."

Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a goal by junior defender Ali Fenter with an assist by freshman midfielder Eileen Maes. Fenter’s shot went off the hands of USC goalkeeper Shelby Church, deflected off the crossbar, and crossed the goal line.

The Trojans (10-4-3, 3-2-1 Pac-10) tied the match in the 52nd minute on a goal by Brittany Kerridge, then took a 2-1 lead when Autumn Altamirano scored in the 59th minute.

The Cougars close out the Pac-10 road portion of their 2010 schedule when they play, Sunday, Oct. 31 against No. 22 UCLA at 1 p.m.
