Saint Mary's men beat Gonzaga

Moraga, CA – Jordan Grider, of the Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team, scored on a header off a free kick from Dylan Leslie with :02 left in regulation, sending the Gaels to a 2-1 win over Gonzaga on Friday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium. With the win, SMC improves to 8-5-1, 4-3-0 West Coast Conference, while Gonzaga drops to 4-11, 1-7 WCC.

After a scoreless first-half, Gonzaga took the lead on a strike by Collin Harrison in the 49th minute. The shot came on a free kick and Harrison rolled it into the bottom left corner of the net past SMC goalkeeper Braden Hoyt.

"Gonzaga scoring a goal woke us up," said head coach Adam Cooper. "It was nice to have Tommy (Mohoric) back and Justin Grider did a nice job filling the middle."

Mohoric sent through SMC’s first-goal in the 59th minute. Leslie set up the play sending a cross pass to Mohoric who headed the goal from the box.

With the score tied in the 90th minute, a foul was called on Gonzaga which set up Leslie for another free kick from the right sideline. Leslie sent it through the air and Jordan Grider was there to head home the game winning goal with the clock showing :02 left in the game which proved to be the final.

After a first-half which saw both teams take three shots apiece, the Gaels stepped up in the second-half as Gonzaga had to play a man-down for the final 25 minutes due to an issued red card.

Saint Mary’s would go on to out-shoot Gonzaga 10-4 in the second half and take seven, second half corner kicks compared to just one by the Bulldogs.

There were a total of 33 fouls in the game, 18 committed by the Gaels.

Braden Hoyt improved to 2-0 in goal for the Gaels, making three saves and allowing one goal. Ryan Caballero allowed two goals for the Bulldogs and recorded two saves.

Mohoric, who only played in the second-half, took three a team-high three shots along with Justin Grider. Erik Rivas added two shots in the match.

For Gonzaga, Stefan Eysteinsson took two shots to pace the Bulldogs.

Saint Mary’s is back in action on October 31 when it takes on Portland at 1:00 p.m. on the Moraga campus. Seniors Dylan Leslie, Erik Rivas and Jordan Grider will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony shortly before kick-off.
