Updated: October 31, 2010
BOSTON - Looking to carry momentum into the America East tournament, the regular season champion Boston University men's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory over Albany Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. For the second consecutive game, both senior Aaron O'Neal and junior Ben Berube each tallied a goal, as the Terriers improve to 11-4-1 and 6-1 in league play.
Junior Michael Bustamante and senior Ben Havey also scored in the contest, while redshirt freshman Brandon Briggs and sophomore Trevor McManamon combined for their second consecutive shutout following Wednesday's 4-0 win against Binghamton. The eight goals mark the most scored by a BU squad in back-to-back games since 2001, when the Terriers earned a 2-0 win over Vermont and followed with a 6-0 victory against Delaware.
They finished the conference schedule outscoring opponents, 17-3, with Berube posting 12 of his 21 points in league action. He tallied one of them at 9:53 when he fed O'Neal inside the box for the 1-0 lead. With the score, O'Neal now has sole possession of 10th-place all-time at BU with 27 career goals, surpassing assistant coach and BU Hall of Famer Francis Okaroh.
Minutes later at 15:12, Bustamante was fouled in the box and converted on his second penalty kick of the year, giving the Terriers extra breathing room against a Great Danes team (5-10-1, 1-5-1 AE) that needed the win to remain alive for the AE tournament. Havey continued to apply pressure by drilling a pass from junior Stephen Knox into the lower left side of the goal for the 3-0 lead.
Finally at 72:49, Berube recorded his eighth goal of the season with assistance from senior Ryan Shea. In total, the Terriers out shot Albany, 22-6, and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The Great Danes failed to attempt a shot on goal, while their keeper, Adrian Foncette, finished with seven saves.
Prior to the start of the game, BU honored six seniors, including Havey, O'Neal, Jack Orr, Temi Akinsanya and the twin brothers, Matthew Shea and Ryan Shea.
They along with their teammates will now get to train for a week and a half before hosting an America East semifinal match-up on Wednesday, Nov. 10 against an opponent still to be determined.
