Wake Forest men beat Boston College

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Andy Lubahn scored his first-career hat trick and Chris Duvall earned a career-high three assists to lead Wake Forest to a 4-3 upset of No. 18 Boston College on Saturday evening at Spry Stadium.
The Deacons even their overall record at 7-7-2 (4-2-1 ACC) while the Eagles fall to 8-3-5 (1-2-4 ACC).
Boston College took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but the Deacons took over in the second half, as Luke Norman found the back of the net in the 50th minute to tie the game and Lubahn followed with back-to-back goals in less than a minute to give Wake a 3-1 lead. After the Eagles pulled within one goal, Lubahn scored his third goal of the game in the 71st minute to put Wake up 4-2, and the Deacs would go on to win 4-3.
Lubahn’s three-goal performance set new career highs for goals and points in a game, and it was the first Wake Forest hat trick since Zach Schilawski found the back of the net three times against Virginia Tech on Oct. 2, 2009. The sophomore leads the Deacs this season with seven goals.
Duvall, a freshman, had unquestionably the best game of his young career, earning three assists, one shy of the Wake Forest record, to set new career highs for assists and points in a game. Fellow freshman Luca Gimenez continued his strong play this season, assisting on Lubahn’s first goal to record his 10th point of the season.
The Deacons outshot the Eagles 14-12 in the game.
Akira Fitzgerald made four saves to earn his seventh win of the season, while the Eagles’ Justin Luthy made two saves in a losing effort.
Boston College came out of the gate strong with Kyle Bekker forcing Akira Fitzgerald to make a save in the 13th minute, but the Deacons found their footing as the half wore on.
Andy Lubahn unleashed a dangerous shot in the 24th minute, and off of the ensuing corner kick, Lubahn steered a header towards goal that beat the BC keeper but clanged off the cross bar.
The Eagles took the lead in the 43rd minute when a corner kick hit the head of a Wake Forest defender and went into the net for an own goal, giving Boston College a 1-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Wake Forest came out of the locker room inspired in the second half, and the tenacity paid off as Luke Norman streaked onto the end of a long cross from Duvall in the 50th minute, driving a header into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Lubahn struck for the first time in the 58th minute. A through ball from the midfield sent Gimenez past the BC defense, and after his shot was saved by a diving Luthy, Lubahn was there to put the rebound into the vacant net to give the Deacs a 2-1 lead.
His second goal in the 59th minute came in similar fashion. Duvall unleashed a shot from the right that bounced off of the crossbar but right to Lubahn who headed it over the line to extend the Deacon advantage.
Edvin Worley pulled a goal back for BC in the 60th minute when his shot from the right 19 yards took a deflection off a Wake Forest defender, giving Fitzgerald no chance of making a save.
Lubahn restored Wake’s two-goal lead in the 71st minute when a pass from Duvall out of the midfield sent him on a breakaway and he chipped a shot over Luthy to put the Deacs ahead 4-2.
BC’s Charlie Rugg rounded out the scoring in the 89th minute when he volleyed a failed clearance attempt inside the near post from 12 yards.
The Deacons will travel to take on Davidson on Tuesday in a non-conference fixture before finishing the regular season at Duke on Friday at 7 p.m.
