Long Island women beat Robert Morris

Updated: October 31, 2010
Moon Township, Pa. – The Long Island University women’s soccer team capped the regular season with a 1-0 win at Robert Morris on North Athletic Complex. The win clinched the Northeast Conference regular season crown for the Blackbirds, who will be the top seed in next weekend’s league tournament. LIU improved to 14-2-3 overall and 8-1-1 in NEC play. Long Island took the early lead in the eighth minute when senior Caitlin Meadows laid off a pass for junior Ariana Calderon who buried her shot in the upper-left corner from 16 yards out. The Colonials had a chance to tie the contest midway through the opening period when Katie Austin ran onto a long ball, but her shot slid wide of the far post. LIU had a pair of good chances to extend its lead before halftime, but narrowly missed. In the 25th minute, senior Kayleigh Morgan had a side volley from eight yards out, but Jessica Olin was able to react and deflect the ball away. Meadows got on the end of a ball just before halftime, but her header from point-blank range was stopped by Olin. The Blackbirds controlled the play in the second half and did not allow the Colonials to draw level. Freshman Jessica Sexton made one save on each side of halftime for her ninth shutout of the year, which tied the LIU single-season mark. Olin finished with five saves for RMU, which was outshot, 15-4, by Long Island. The Blackbirds will host the NEC Tournament at Fairleigh Dickinson University beginning on Friday, Nov. 5.
