Wake Forest women lose to North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 4 North Carolina got goals from Courtney Jones and Crystal Dunn to defeat Wake Forest 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest’s Senior Day was held in conjunction with the match, and seniors Amanda Barasha, Bianca D’Agostino, Victoria Delbono and Casey Luckhurst were honored before the game in a ceremony on the field. Wake Forest ends the regular season with a 11-7-1 (5-4-1 ACC), securing a fifth-place conference finish for the second-consecutive season. The Deacs will be the No. 5 seed in the ACC Championship which will be held in Cary, N.C and will face fourth-seeded Florida State in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Opening round game times will be announced tomorrow. With the win, North Carolina finishes with a 16-2-1 (8-2-0 ACC) mark, clinching the ACC regular season title and the top seed in the tournament. The Tar Heels will open ACC Championship with Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels scored a goal in each half with Jones striking in the opening period and Dunn scoring in the final frame. Dunn also assisted on Jones’ goal, giving her a three-point game. It was only the third time that the Deacs had been shutout all season. Hannah Daly played the full 90 minutes in net for UNC, earning the win and the shutout while making one save. Aubrey Bledsoe took the loss for Wake Forest, making four saves. Carolina brought pressure from the outset, as Jones took a strong shot at goal, forcing Bledsoe to make a save in the third minute. The Tar Heels took the lead in the 18th minute. Crystal Dunn played a through ball on the right to Jones who blasted a shot past Bledsoe to give North Carolina a 1-0 advantage. Though the Deacons only recorded one shot in the first half, they had no lack of scoring chances. In the 23rd minute, Bianca D’Agostino just missed getting her head onto the end of a cross with nothing between her and the goal, and in the 31st The Heels entered the locker room with a 1-0 lead and extended their advantage in the second half as a passing sequence between Ali Hawkins and Meghan Klingenberg in the 75th minute fed the ball to Dunn, who hit a strong shot from 18 yards into the back of the net.
