Stony Brook men lose to UMBC
November 1, 2010
The Stony Brook men's soccer team's five-match unbeaten streak was snapped after suffering a 1-0 loss to UMBC Sunday evening at LaValle Stadium. The loss means that the Seawolves will go into the America East Championship as the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Vermont next Saturday at 5 p.m.
Stony Brook ends the regular season with a 9-6-3 mark, 3-2-2 in America East. The Seawolves are tied with Binghamton with 11 points, but win the tiebreaker by virtue of a 2-1 win over the Bearcats on Oct. 23. UMBC finishes the regular season 10-4-2 and earns a first-round bye in the tournament with a 4-1-2 record and 14 points. If Stony Brook defeats Vermont, it will travel to play UMBC on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
Stony Brook had a great first half, holding possession for most of the time and limiting UMBC's chances, but the Seawolves were unable to convert any shots, despite four on goal.
In the second half, Stony Brook committed a foul about 20 yards out from the goal. Andrew Bulls took the free kick, and the shot appeared to deflect off a Stony Brook defender. The deflection left Seawolves keeper Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) out of position, and the ball went into the right corner of the net for a goal.
Stony Brook fought back with offensive momentum, but was unable to score. With only two minutes left, Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a header off a cross that Louisignau made a diving save to his left to keep the lead. Then as time was expiring, Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) had a big kick that again the UMBC keeper made a nice save to preserve the win.
Fernandes led the Seawolves in shots with seven, five going on goal. Manz had four saves for Stony Brook.
Stony Brook will begin defense of its 2009 America East Championship next Saturday against Vermont at LaValle Stadium at 5 p.m. Continue to visit GoSeawolves.org for updates on ticket information.
