Manhattan men lose to Saint Peter's

November 7, 2010
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College men's soccer team fell 7-0 in their season finale at Saint Peter's College Saturday afternoon. Behind two goals and three assists from junior Harry Newman, the Peacocks (11-5-1, 7-1-1) jumped out to a 6-0 first half lead and never looked back on a beautiful afternoon at Jaroschak Field. In total, six different players scored and eight recorded at least one point. For Manhattan (0-16-0, 0-9-0), the loss concludes a difficult season in which the Jaspers went winless in their 16-game slate. Celebrating "Senior Day", Saint Peter's played 90-minutes of inspired soccer and proved to be one of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's finest teams, earning a No.2 seed in next week's MAAC Conference Championships. In what was a truly impressive first half, the Peacocks scored in the 4th, 10th, 22nd, 34th 40th and 45th minute to ensure victory in their final regular season contest of the season. Sophomore Stephen Carty, Newman, senior Zabit Ahmati, junior Kevin Olsen and freshman Liam Tivenan each contributed at least one goal in the opening 45 minutes. While the Jaspers were outshot 22-7, including 11-2 in shots on goal, they did show strong ball distribution and had several chances of their own. Seven different players attempted at least one shot with freshman Jake Donowick (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) adding two. Learning to take small victories from difficult results, Manhattan allowed only one goal in the second half, on an unassisted putback by Ahmati, his second of the game in the 69th minute. Between the pipes, Peacocks keeper Tyler Clarhaut made two saves for the shutout, while Jaspers freshman goaltender Christopher Lands (Montclair, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) finished a strong first season by making three saves. Playing their final contest for the Green and White, the Jaspers said goodbye to seniors Sean Russell (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), Joshua Renner (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John-Jay Fishkill), Matt Gormley (Wyckoff, N.J./Bergen Catholic), Joseph Lorenz (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross) and Jake Ostrov (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga).
