UNC Wilmington men defeat George Mason

FAIRFAX, Virginia – Senior Tyler Clare knocked home the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute to lift UNCW to a 2-1 win over home-standing George Mason on Saturday at George Mason Field. Despite the win, UNCW will not qualify for the Colonial Athletic Association tournament next week following wins by Hofstra and Old Dominion.
The Seahawks, who halted a seven-game winless streak, closed out the season with an 8-6-4 record overall and 4-3-4 in the league. The Patriots (8-7-2, 4-5-2), meanwhile, also failed to make the four-team conference championship with the loss. ODU clinched the final playoff spot with 17 points after edging Drexel, 3-2, in Philadelphia.

The goal rallied UNCW from a late game strike by George Mason in the final minute of regulation. Trailing 1-0 with 33 seconds left in the second half, Parker Walton headed home a long throw-in from Hugh Roberts to draw the Patriots even.
The Patriots nearly walked off the field victors in the first overtime period, but Allen Lomax cleared a header from Brent Brockman off the line in the 99th minute.
Sophomore Etienne Boulanger gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute off an assist from junior Shawn Guderian.
UNCW goalkeeper Brock Duckworth was tested on the evening and finished with six saves. GMU outshot the Seahawks, 22-9, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half.
