Boston College men lose to North Carolina; ACC

North Carolina’s Enzo Martinez broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute to lift the top-seeded Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory over No. 5 seed Boston College in the semifinals of the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

The Eagles will await Monday’s NCAA Selection Show to learn when and where they will next play. The Tar Heels advance to face second-seeded Maryland at 1:00 p.m. Sunday for the ACC title.  

Martinez notched the gamewinner at 54:01, his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Kirk Urso started the decisive attack with a 35-yard shot that was knocked just left of the goal by BC goalkeeper Justin Luthy. Martinez was in position for a quick shot on the rebound, and after his first attempt bounced off the left post, he rebounded his own shot with a goal that gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.

The Tar Heel defense made the goal stand up, limiting Boston College to a total of seven shots and no shots on goal.  Junior Amit Aburmad led all BC players with three shots, while sophomore Kyle Bekker tallied two.

After a first half that featured no shots on goal by either team, North Carolina registered 12 of its 16 shots in the second half.

With the win, North Carolina extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches. The only tie during the streak was a 1-1 contest at Boston College on October 15.

Game Notes: North Carolina’s victory snapped Boston College’s four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) against the Tar Heels.  The Eagles last lost to North Carolina on Oct. 26, 2006.
