Boston College men fall to Brown in NCAA

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Boston College sophomore midfielder Kyle Bekker scored late in the first half, temporarily tying the score at 1-1, before Brown junior Austin Mandel broke the tie just 2:33 later to lift the Bears to a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before 981 fans at Stevensen Field.
Brown’s season continues with a second-round match at Connecticut on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. while Boston College concludes its 2010 campaign with a 10-5-5 record.
BC sophomore goalkeeper Justin Luthy registered six saves in the match, including an outstanding diving stop on junior Sean Rosa’s curling right-footed blast in the 35th minute.
Brown opened the scoring early in the match on a Jon Okafor tally in the 11th minute.
Bekker responded with a right-footed shot from 22 yards at 40:23 to tie the score before Mandel scored decisively at 42:56.
Brown finished the match with a 22-15 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Bears goalkeeper Paul Grandstand recorded four saves in the winning effort to improve to 12-3-3.

Game Notes: Senior midfielder Karl Reddick came off the bench and played 62 minutes in his final collegiate contest. Reddick played in 80 career games … Freshman defender Ryan Dunn played 40 second-half minutes … A total of 23 fouls were called in the match, including 13 against BC of which 12 were called in second-half play … The Eagles advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season.
