The TopDrawerSoccer.com High School Team of the Week returns with a glance at one team that recently wrapped up a state title push in Alabama and another that has just two wins to go before it can call itself repeat state champs in Texas.

Here’s a look at this week’s high school teams of the week.

Boys: Coppell High School (Coppell, Texas)

Defending any state title is massively difficult. But try defending the Class 5A boys state soccer title in Texas, and things get even tougher. Coppell ran away with the 5A boys state title last year, and despite being locked in one of the most difficult regions in the state, Coppell is on the doorstep to a second straight state title.

Coppell had to win three games last week to get back to the state tournament in Georgetown this weekend. The first was an impressive 2-0 win over fellow district winner Duncanville, which paid Coppell’s way into the regional tourney. A 3-1 win over a salty Eastwood team then paved the way for a massive matchup with Metroplex rival Flower Mound Marcus, one of the nation’s top winter boys sides. Coppell was dominant, marking down a deserved 2-0 win to

Girls: Glenwood School (Smiths Station, Ala.)

The Alabama Independent School Association playoffs wound down to a close last weekend with Glenwood and Macon-East battling it out for the right to be called the state’s AISA champion. In the end, Glenwood was too strong and powered its way past Macon-East to repeat as state champs and keep the title at home in Montgomery, Ala.

The game was hotly contested throughout, and the teams crammed all five of their combined goals into the first 40 minutes. Barbara Cox converted a penalty for Macon-East for an early lead, but Glenwood’s Whitley Anderson struck back with the equalizer soon thereafter. Carson Collins then gave Glenwood a 2-1 edge before Cox secured the brace to knot it back up. Finally, Glenwood got the state championship winner from Emily Robertson just before the half came to a close for a 3-2 lead. The defense was sturdy in the second half, allowing the Lady Gators to run away with its second straight AISA state title.

Honorable mention

Boys: Byron Nelson High School (Trophy Club, Texas); Friendswood High School (Friendswood, Texas)

Girls: McKinney Boyd High School (McKinney, Texas); Wylie East High School (Wylie, Texas)
