The Labor Day weekend offered a few tournaments for nationally ranked teams to show off their skill, but in large, it simply marked the end of summer and the start of a new school year.

Within the next seven days, every fall-playing state will be involved in regular-season play.

On the boys side, Haverford School (Haverford, Pa.) inched up to No. 7 following a pair of shutout wins during its weekend mixer event, which featured elite teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. In Ohio, St. Edward (Cleveland, Ohio) edged Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) in a shootout to capture the Crusader Cup title. St. Louis University High (St. Louis, Mo.) and Olentangy Liberty (Powell, Ohio) combined for a 3-0-1 showing against Kentucky's top teams.

Top-ranked St. Benedict's had little trouble in its first outing of the year, a 4-0 win over Summit Country Day (Cincinnati, Ohio), which was 3-0 before that Sunday meeting.

On the girls side, St. Ursula (Cincinnati, Ohio) edged Notre Dame Academy (Park Hills, Ky.) 1-0 in a battle of FAB 50 teams that help sort out how the teams in those states stack up. Meanwhile, all the projected powers in Indiana settled nothing amongst themselves last week as Avon (Avon, Ind.) and Noblesville (Noblesville, Ind.), and Carmel (Carmel, Ind.) and Fishers (Fishers, Ind.), and Fishers vs. Zionsville (Zionsville, Ind.) matches all ended in ties.

Looking ahead, this week's Lady Eagle Invitational in Zionsville, Ind., and McDonogh Invitational in Owings Mills, Md., features a combined 11 FAB 50 girls soccer teams, making the outcomes at those events the true comparison point for many nationally ranked programs. In addition to the FAB 50-ranked squads, there will be 12 other teams currently in the state or regional rankings competing at one of those events.
