Surf's Kate Perry commits to Texas A&M
February 23, 2010

Texas A&M(w) women’s soccer has been around the top of the heap in women’s college soccer for a while now. The perennial Big 12 power coached by G Guerreri bring an enjoyable mix of grit and attacking flair, mixing it up with the best of the them in the middle of the park but seemingly always creating their share of good scoring chances in the forward third.

Their most recent verbal commitment for the 2011 class, San Diego Surf midfielder Kate Perry, fits right in with this. The veteran of multiple youth national team camps is a tough ball-winner for sure, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she can’t play. Perry has skill in both feet and can strike a ball with the best of them. Her style will fit right in with the Aggies.

She thinks the whole A&M experience will fit with her as well.

“It’s a really great school and a really nice campus,” she said. “I really like the coaching staff and it seems like a fun place to be, plus they are already a great team.”

Perry definitely will not be accused of being overly concerned about weather in making her college choice. The Southern California product visited College Station in early December for the NCAA Women’s College Cup and accompanying youth event, the U.S. Youth Soccer National League. The weather for those days was as follows: Thursday – Bitterly cold for night games; Friday – Abominably cold and even snowing during the day (abominably cold is much colder than bitterly cold, for the record); Saturday – Still very cold but it didn’t kill you as much to kick a ball; Sunday – Cold with steady rain to make everything including the youth fields miserable.

All of which means that G Guerreri must be some recruiter. The soft-spoken Perry remembers how bad the weather was, but insisted it didn’t bother her too much.

“I didn’t mind it,” she said. “It was a good change to experience.”

Perry, who is considering a major in the psychology field at this point, is looking forward to being a part of the program.

“They play good soccer,” she said. “They are pretty close to getting (to the top) and I want to be a part of that.”

Perry added that she made a point not to rush her decision. She joins two other TopDrawerSocer.com Top 30 players in committing to the Aggies. KCFC Alliance’s Shea Groom and Dallas Texans’ Kelley Monogue, both forwards, cast their lot with Texas A&M(w) recently as well. Other 2011 verbals to Texas A&M(w) are So Cal Blues midfielder Leigh Edwards and D’Feeters defender Meghan Streight.

Along with the big decision on college, Perry also recently enjoyed another great soccer experience, participating with the U17 English National Team at a training camp near Manchester.
