As Under-17 Women’s National Team Head Coach Natalia Astrain tries to select a squad for her team’s qualification opener on Saturday, she has a problem.

She hasn’t seen her team play yet — in fact, no one has, at least in a competitive match.

The U17 national team hasn’t played 90 minutes in Concacaf competition since 2019, their competitive slate thrown into jeopardy by the Covid-19 pandemic. But that doesn’t mean she’s been in the dark since her appointment at the end of 2021. Since then, the former FC Barcelona coach has hosted a few camps and kept a keen eye on the slew of talent available to her.
