Cosmos Academy West to join Chivas USA
August 10, 2011
The U.S. Development Academy is contracting.
Cosmos Academy West confirmed to TopDrawerSoccer.com on Tuesday that the club is folding just prior to the 2011-12 Development Academy season.
Cosmos Academy West, which had partnered with New York Soccer before splitting from Los Angeles Premier FC just months ago, will now dissolve into the Chivas USA Academy for the upcoming season.
A statement released by Cosmos Academy West said the club will not be able to function or exist given the parameters that a professional soccer team in New York City must follow. The club is of course aiming to bring Major League Soccer to New York City.
In its short existence, the Cosmos West club had experienced some success. The U18 team made the playoffs this past season en route to coach Dan Calichman being voted coach of the year for that region and age group.
Though it’s unclear what move Calichman will make next, Cosmos West has indicated that coaches and staff will have an opportunity to continue working within the academy system in Southern California.
It just won’t be with Cosmos West.
