Dramatic goals lift teams to victory on ESP Day 2
July 7, 2009
COMMERCE CITY, COLORADO – The soccer was better on Day two of the adidas ESP college identification event at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

There was also a run on dramatic goals, with Leon Carby, Armando “Chiva” Gaytan and Kovi Konowiecki each scoring in the final few minutes to lift their respective teams to a victory or a draw.

Boys club soccer players compete.adidas ESP saw better play on Day 2 in Colorado.
With a host of coaches watching the players’ every move, performances went up and down and a lot of notes were taken in little black books. The event continues on Tuesday with morning matches and the coveted All-Star game in the evening, with those occasions sandwiching a memorable opportunity for players to train with French and Juventus legend Zinedine Zidane.

The event, run by Greg Ion, Al Pastore and a crew from adidas, is first class all the way and players are clearly enjoying the experience. Following are some details and lineups from Monday’s matches.

Team 1 (Brian Quinn) 3, Team 5 (Alfonso Mondelo) 2

Carby gave his team the three points with a good run down the right and a rifle shot inside the far post to make the final scored 3-2. The Oakwood SC forward is maybe the quickest player in the camp and loves to run 1v1 at players.

Concorde Fire’s Christopher Duvall made a good run down the right early in the game and his drive went just wide. Team 5 defender Victor Rodriguez impressed with his ability to read and step to the ball.

On the other end, Cody Adams of FC Dallas continued his good play with a weaving run and shot that took a deflection and found the back of the net to put Team 5 up 1-0. Just a minute later, Team 1 equalized when Alexander Henry hit a corner and Westside Metros’ defender Josh Miller met it with a brilliant diving header to level the match. Miller has been good in the back line here all week and Henry is a high-energy forward.

Just before the half, Seth Casiple set up Carby for a goal, but the offside flag negated the goal and teams went to the break 1-1. In the 2nd half, Team 5’s Dale McDonald (Brooklyn Patriots) made a strong run through the middle but Team 1 goalkeeper Taylor Hafling (Javanon) dove bravely at his feet to break up the play. Carby then hit a good ball through the 6-yard box but nobody was there to touch it into the goal.

Seth Casiple of Northern California club Placer United then tied the match with an audacious 40-yard chip of the keeper. Alex Molano of FC Dallas came close with a free kick, before Carby provided the winner on the other end.

Sockers FC midfielder James  Hollander and Real Las Vegas SC right back Josh Sylva were good in the match for Team 5.

LAFC Chelsea forward Armando “Chiva” Gaytan is a 2011 graduate who strikes the ball about as well as anyone in the country. He scored both goals for Team 6, and the 2nd came in the late going after Derby County Wolves player Josh Gatt rolled a ball back for him and Gaytan unloaded from 25 yards.

For Team 6, Vardar’s Soony Saad and GSA Phoenix Tyler Peoples scored good goals.

Gatt was active again in running with the ball. Defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste of Albertson SC has a good build for the position and puts in some hard challenges.
