ESP ends event with spirited championship match
July 9, 2009

COMMERCE CITY, COLORADO – The final morning of this year’s adidas ESP produced a lot of goals, a spirited championship match and a reminder that 4 or 5 matches in 4 days is more than young men should probably be playing.

Elite boys club soccer players compete.ESP wrapped up on Wednesday.
The event has been well run and a lot of college coaches were on hand all week, but most of them were gone by the time this morning’s games rolled around.

In the end, the team coached by Roberto Dos Santos won the title over Mark Santel’s squad with a 1-0 victory. The Team 4 win was ironic in that the same team looked pretty poor on the opening day of the event. Three consecutive wins took care of that and in the end this group put in an organized, workmanlike display.

Individual awards given included the Golden Boot, Golden Glove and MVP trophies.

Jacksonville, Florida defender/midfielder Anthony Kattreh was the MVP, Miami FC goalkeeper Sebastian Evers won the top goalkeeper award, and Soony Saad (Vardar) and Leon Carby (Oakwood SC) will share the Golden Boot Award with five goals each.

Wednesday morning, Team 4’s Gregory Davis scored the winning goal in the title showdown, racing in from the left and then finishing neatly 1v1 in the first half for the game’s lone goal. FC DELCO goalkeeper Robert Rosato made some good 2nd half saves to preserve the shutout. A would-be equalizer in the final minutes from CASL’s James Williams was ruled out very questionably for offside.

Santiago Velez of Real Colorado and Kevin Pahl of Florida club Lakeland FC were good on the day for Team 4. Sunny Jane of United FC 1996 and Trevor Hubbard of Solar SC were good for Team 3.

Team 2, coached by Steve Trittschuh, won a consolation match 6-3 over Team 1 (Brian Quinn). Arsenal FC forward Miles Byass turned in a stellar 4-goal effort, showing a great burst of acceleration and cool finishing ability. BW Gottschee’s Orlando Castaneda scored two for the team as well.

Oakwood SC’s Leon Carby and Concorde Fire duo Robert Botchway and Chris Duvall each scored a goal for Team 1, which also got good play from Placer United’s Seth Casiple.

Soony Saad continued his high-scoring ways with a 5th goal on the week to help Team 6 (Ross Paule) win 2-1 over Team 5 (Alfonso Mondelo). Tennessee Rush defender Chandler Gagnon also scored for Paule’s team, while Real Las Vegas fullback Josh Sylva scored a tremendous goal for his team.

Sockers’ defender Reed Patterson was good again for Team 6, while perhaps the biggest mystery of the week is how Team 5 and FC Dallas player Cody Adams, a Denver recruit, did not make the All-Star game. He was excellent again Wednesday morning.
