La Roca, Legends look to round robin stage
April 5, 2010

The U16 Girls of the Far West Regional League continued play last weekend, and the playoff teams are finally set.

Four teams have earned a spot in the round robin that will determine who earns an invitation to the Regional Championships this summer: La Roca Premier, Legends FC, San Diego Surf White, and Real So Cal White.

La Roca has dominated the league all season and already qualified for the round robin on the weekend of March 27, when they won two games and tied one.

Their first game, against So Cal Blues, was a messy affair, played on a small and bumpy field. Both sides had chances and the Blues were up 1-0 at the half, but La Roca roared back with two second half goals for the win.

Chansi Crompton scored and played very well in the central midfield for La Roca, while Brecken Holbrook was solid in the defense.

La Roca’s second Saturday game was against another strong side in Real So Cal.

La Roca appeared a bit tired and lethargic and wasn’t able to generate many chances on offense. Real So Cal attacked and got plenty of shots on goal but wasn’t able to finish any, thanks in large part to the performance of La Roca goalie Danny Mackey. The game ended a scoreless draw.

Finally, La Roca faced San Diego Surf Blue on March 28. Even though La Roca already knew they would advance to the round robin, they summoned a strong effort and won 2-0 behind the skills of Chansi Crompton and the dominance of defenders Courtney Wood and Brecken Holbrook.

Meanwhile, Legends FC earned a round-robin berth after shooting to the top of Group A with four victories and one loss in their last five games.

On March 27, they faced regional power Sereno SC.

In a tough match complicated by strong winds, both teams had trouble possessing and playing the ball to feet. But the game was decided when central midfielder Allyn Brown was taken down inside the Sereno box and Kodi Lavrusky put away the penalty kick.

The Legends’ second game of the day was another rugged, wind-swept battle, this time with Colorado Storm Royal. The ball fluttered all over the field, but Legends FC earned the victory after Addison Carroll finished off a curling cross from Lindsey Salcido for a 1-0 advantage.

The Legends faced the Eagles on March 28. Possession went back and forth and the game was scoreless at the half, but the Legends scored two goals in the opening minutes of the second half. Kalene Needham scored the first and Kodi Lavrusky scored the second off a quick-strike counterattack to earn the Legends a 2-0 victory.

On April 3, Legends solidified their standing at the top of Group A with a 3-0 victory over Las Vegas Premier White, despite a 1-0 loss to San Diego Surf white earlier in the day.

Kodi Lavrusky scored two goals and Kasrum James added another, while defenders Erica McMullen and Nykell Seymour also performed well.

The round robin stage will kick off April 10, when La Roca Premier and Legends FC face off with the other qualifiers, San Diego Surf White and Real So Cal White.

It promises to be another tense and exciting weekend, as a chance to earn a berth in the Far West Regional Championships this summer hangs in the balance.
