CHARLESTON, S.C. (June 15, 2011) – Fourteen new teams were added to the list of National Cup X Regional champions as the Modesto, Calif. (Boys) Regional came to a close Tuesday. The event was held June 11-14 at Turlock Sports Complex and Mistlin Sports Complex.

Among the 14 Regional champions  ̶  each from a different club  ̶  were a pair of repeat titlists, U-14 Super Group winner Milan FC Rossoneri and U-15 Super Group champ Sacramento United Reds. Both of those teams were able to successfully defend their crowns from the 2010 National Cup XI Modesto Regional.

“This event brings together the top teams in Northern California, so it makes it very exciting to try to stay on top,” said Milan FC Rossoneri coach J.R. Maldonado. “We lost our first game, but bounced back to win the rest. We’ve got a great group of players who work very hard and are committed to the game. I think that’s been the key to their success.”

Milan FC Rossoneri will look to claim the club’s first National Cup championship July 29-Aug. 1 when it heads to Boise, Idaho, for the National Cup X Finals. There they will try to become the 100th different club to win at least one National Cup title, joining the current list of 99 different clubs who have won 145 national championships over the first nine years of the National Cup’s history.

National Cup X Regionals will continue through July 12 in a total of 10 cities. Regional-winning teams in the U-13 through U-17 age groups advance to the National Cup X Finals.

Regional play resumes June 18-21 with Regionals in Cincinnati, Ohio; Denver, Colo.; and Modesto, Calif. (Girls).
