No competition for dominant PDA girls
May 14, 2010
Talk about a one-sided affair.

On Region I playoff weekend, the girls of the Players Development Academy (PDA) made the fields at Kirkwood, Delaware their personal stomping ground.

PDA was the spring league champion in the U14, U16, U17 and U18 age groups, and each team earned the opportunity to compete for the Region I Championship this summer.

Here’s how it all went down.

U16 Girls: In Saturday’s semi-final, PDA Charge faced a very well-coached FC Bucks Extreme team that refused to go down without a fight.

Charge goalkeeper Lisa Capelli bailed her team out with great saves on a number of occasions, including in the penalty shootout, where she willed her team to victory by blocking all but one of Extreme’s shots.

So despite their subpar performance, the Charge advanced to Sunday’s final to face their arch-rival, FC Penn Strikers.

There was loads of talent on both sides of the ball in this game. Strikers forward Brittany Radcliffe was a constant threat, but Charge defenders Carli Black, Kristin McNabb, Stephanie Campo, Carra Pool and Morgan Thomasian communicated constantly to double- and triple-team her and keep her out of goal.

And in the offensive third, the Charge forwards were able to capitalize on their opportunities.

Nicolette Driesse, Rachel Cole, and Cassidy Benintente scored, while Cassie Inacio was dynamic passing out of the midfield, and PDA charged to a 3-0 victory.

The Charge now head to the Region I Championships in the summer, where they will try to continue building on the momentum they have worked to create all spring.

U17 Girls: PDA Tsunami met the FC Stars of Mass in a Saturday semi-final that was complicated by very strong winds.

The Tsunami knocked in two early goals, one from Daphne Corboz to make the score 2-0 only seven minutes in, but the Tsunami had trouble finishing on the offensive end for the rest of the game.

It was left up to the defense to close the game out, and they did so behind strong performances from center backs Sarah Figner and Shannon Roche and jack-of-all-trades Danielle Colaprico, who made tackles all over the field.

Stars of Mass got one late score, but it wasn’t enough as Tsunami punched its ticket to the final.

Bethesda Dragons, Tsunami’s opponent in the final, had given up only one goal in their last eight games, and their defense flexed its muscle in the first half.

The Dragons went up 1-0 just before halftime, but Tsunami came out of the break with a greater sense of urgency and started taking some risks. The risks paid off, as Tsunami got a goal from Daphne Corboz to send the game into overtime.

Stefanie Scholz scored seven minutes into overtime, and the Tsunami defense – led by Kyarah Fouchee and Villanova-commit Kaitlin Hogman – held tight until the final whistle signaled another Tsunami victory.

The win in the final was especially satisfying for the Tsunami players, who had made it to the playoffs for the past several years without ever winning it all. The Region I Championships now await them in the summer.

U18 Girls: The story is a bit different for the U18 PDA Fire, who had already won Regionals three years in a row.

Their semi-final match against FC Stars of Mass featured wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour that contributed to some sloppy play on both sides. Central midfielders Kristin Niederhaus and Gabby Guzman played well, but not enough to break the tie that led to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, goalkeeper Kate Courter was nearly impenetrable, and her superb shot-blocking sent the Fire to the final.

In Sunday’s final, the Fire met FC DELCO Sting. Tied 0-0 at half, forward Kaitlin Brenn broke the game open with two goals in the second half, and defenders Carli O’Toole and Kacie Kergidis kept their defense tight to preserve the 2-0 victory.

This will be the Fire’s 5th appearance at Regionals in a row, where they will look to earn their fourth straight regional title.

The only thing the Fire haven’t won yet is Nationals, and this year, their team looks to have as good a chance as any.

As usual, we’ll keep you posted on all the action – so stay tuned.
