Youth National Teams halted until 2021
U.S. Soccer CEO Will Wilson wrote a letter to U.S. Soccer Membership on Thursday announcing some of the moves that USSF is taking to ensure a viable future during these uncertain times. In the letter, he mentioned the decision to end the Development Academy, but did not provide any additional details beyond what was released last night.
Wilson did mention that U.S. Soccer is looking at “an increased emphasis on coaching education, a more comprehensive scouting effort, and working with clubs to maintain and expand the philosophy and standards established through the Development Academies.”
Wilson also stated in the letter that U.S. Soccer will be scaling back Youth National Team programming for 2020, “with the possible exception of those involved in actual competitions.”
Most youth tournaments and events have been canceled or postponed during 2020 including the U17 Women’s World Cup, the U20 Women’s World Cup, and the U23 Olympic qualifying.
Yahoo! Sports reported on Thursday that while USSF reduced their staff by 15 percent, none of those fired were Youth National Team coaches.
