#23 Rangers Defeat Fort Lewis 3-2; Advance to RMAC Championships

DENVER, Colo.:  The Rangers have done it again.  After dropping tough RMAC opponents Fort Lewis College 3-2 in the semi-final round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, Regis will advance to the Championship match to be held Sunday, Nov. 10.  The Rangers will take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University at 1:00 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch.

With the win, Regis advances their overall record to 13-2-1 on the 2013 season thus far.

The match started with quite a bang as the Rangers charged down the field and put a ball on goal, causing the Skyhawk goalie to clear it out and give RU a corner kick attempt.

In the first minute of play just 57 second into the match, senior Ben Fredrickson sent the ball towards the 6-yard box and junior Arnthor Kristinsson dove across both Rangers and Skyhawks to head the ball back into the upper right of the goal.

Playing with momentum, Regis maintained their enthusiasm and in the 26th minute would score again.  The ball was in the 18-yard box and in attempt to clear, an FLC defender misplayed the ball.

Junior Martin Maybin picked up the opportunity and punched the ball in to the bottom right of the goal, ending the first half with the Rangers up 2-0 over the opposition.

Early in the second half, Fort Lewis would make things a little more interesting after scoring their own goal.

Most of the game would remain 2-1 with both sides fighting tooth and nail to keep the advantage or even things up respectively.

With 28 seconds left in the match, Maybin snagged another opportunity.  Kristinsson sent a header from midfield into Maybin in the 18-yard box.  Maybin beat some defenders left and right for an opportunity, and hit the right post on his first attempt.

As the keeper pulled out of the goal to pick up the ball, Maybin rebounded his own shot and poked it through past the FLC keeper, advancing the Rangers up 3-1 over the Skyhawks with only seconds left on the clock.

In a last attempt to keep things alive, FLC raced down the field and put in another goal from the left of RUs goal into the back right corner of the net.

The final score would remain 3-2 for the final moments with Regis coming out victorious and making their way into their second consecutive RMAC Tournament Championship appearance.

Freshman Connor Adkisson put in seven saves throughout the match to guide the Rangers to victory.

Throughout 90:00 minutes of play, Regis would put seven shots on goal in 13 attempts.
