Barone Ties Turner as Saints Prevail
Ashleigh Barone reached another major milestone in her brilliant career Friday night, accounting for the lone goal which propelled the Saints to a season opening 1-0 win at St. Bonaventure. The senior striker registered both the 35th goal overall and 13th game-winning goal of her career to tie the program’s all-time record in each category.
In the 25th minute Brittany Pfaff fed Barone in from the right side where she had no problem beating the keeper to put the Saints (1-0) on top. Thanks to great goalkeeping from fellow senior captain Laura Ettinger, Barone’s goal proved to be enough as the Saints captured their 16th straight regular season non-conference win.
Barone’s score tied her with Kristen Turner ’07 for the program’s all-time record in both goals and game-winning goals while also placing her just two points shy of passing Turner for the all-time scoring record as well.
However, the Bonnies (1-2) controlled tempo and had the majority of chances as they out-shot the Saints, 23-7. But St. Bonaventure could not solve Ettinger, who made nine saves in registering her 14th career shutout. Already the program’s all-time winningest goalkeeper, Ettinger too reached a milestone by posting her 30th career victory.
Alyssa Lapp, Alicia Elwell and Jordan Calabria combined for 13 of the Bonnies’ shots including six which were on target. Meghan Junker stopped two shots for St. Bonaventure which dropped its home opener at McGraw-Jennings Field.
After having their originally scheduled season and home opener cancelled last week due to lightning, the Saints return to Loudonville for what now will be their first home game of the season on Sept. 4 against Quinnipiac at 3 p.m.
