Dube's goal gives King 1-0 win over Pfeiffer

September 23, 2013

BRISTOL, Tenn. – On what was a cool rainy day at Parks Field, the King University men's soccer team took home their first victory of the year. The Tornado got a goal in the 65th minute from Thomas Dube to defeat Pfeiffer University 1-0.

In the first half, both teams went back-and-forth with King (1-3-1, 1-0 CC) having the better of the scoring chances. The Tornado placed two shots on goal, the first from Eli Carasco in the 11th minute, and the other coming in the 17th minute off the foot of Thomas Dube. However, both shots were turned away by Falcon goalkeeper Nicolas Dulac.

Pfeiffer (2-3-1, 0-1 CC) took four shots in the opening half, but not were on target. Their best scoring chance came in the final 10 seconds as they had a shot blocked that resulted in a corner kick. King escaped, leaving a scoreless tie at halftime.

The Tornado continued to put pressure on Pfeiffer as Ryan Murphy took a free kick from 30 yards out that was saved by Dulac. Only two minutes later, Kendal Liburd had a chance, but he put his shot wide right to keep the game scoreless.

King finally broke through in the 65th minute as Dube took a lead pass from Peter Griffith 30 yards from the goal in the middle of the field. Dube was behind the defense, and slid his shot past Dulac to give King the 1-0 lead.

After that point, the Tornado defense dug in, only allowing a pair of corner kicks and one shot, that wasn't on net. King then ran out the clock to take their first victory of the season, and head coachJohn Miglarese's first win at King.

The shots were nearly even as King outshot Pfeiffer 9-8, but the Tornado put seven of their nine shots on goal while the Falcons had just one shot on goal.

King will be in action again on Wednesday when they host Carson-Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
